Pruning Ornamental Grasses

Pruning ornamental grasses should be done any time after the foliage turns to a golden brown(image 1), and before the grass starts to send up new blades in the spring.

Basically, one needs to decide whether or not they like the look of the plant when it turns dormant for the winter. Since the blades still provide structure, we recommend waiting until late winter to prune. Though opinions differ, and the choice is up to you.

You should start by wrapping the entire mass of blades with a length of string or rope. Or, if someone else is available, have them bunch the blades together with their hands. (image 2)

With a set of shears or power trimmers, cut the blades about 6 to 10 inches from the base of the plant. (image 3)

By keeping hold of the sheared blades, you will minimize the amount of clean up time. (image 4)

Trimming the old blades of grass allows for better looking, thicker amount of growth in the spring.
