Is it okay to have wood mulch against the foundation of your home?
When is the best time to aerate my lawn?
Wood mulch will retain moisture much longer than decorative rock. On the typical concrete foundation, a little moisture once in a while shouldn't pose a threat. Even on stucco or treated wood paneling. If the area is consistantly damp or wet, there may be a problem and you should have someone take a look at the situation.
The most important thing to remember when dealing with your foundation is the grade (or slope). It is very important that water drains away from the home.
Most lawns in Colorado Springs are made up of Kentucky Bluegrass sod. This is a cool seson grass with two growing seasons, spring and fall. The holes (cores) created by the aeration machine allow for more extensive root systems, which produces thicker and healthier grass. It is best to aerate at the beginning of each growing season. The ground needs to be soft in order to pull a deep core.
It is also recommended that aeration be done prior to reseeding an area. Each core acts as a chamber, protecting seed from birds and wind. If the area is large then a machine is most efficient. A small area can be handled with a coring rod, or something as simple as a screwdriver.
