Irrigation Systems
What is a Backflow Prevention Device (or Vacuum Breaker)?
Commonly referred to as the "backflow", this device was created to
prevent the water in your irrigation system from reentering, and
contaminating your drinking water. Backflows were made mandatory in
1974. Homes without backflow prevention devices were required to have
them installed. Robertson's Landscaping has been installing backflow
devices since 1954.
When is the best time of the day to water the lawn?
Early mornings or late evenings are the most efficient times to water turf. Avoid the mid-day heat to reduce evaporation.
During the intense heat of summer, your lawn may need the moisture sooner rather than later, making evening watering a better choice. However, some argue that a wet lawn overnight is more susceptible to fungus.
Many of our systems are set to run early in the morning, and if the grass looks stressed from a particularly hot day, we ask the client to manually run through the system in the evening.
A drip system (or drip zone) is safe to run during the mid-day heat, as the water is directly deposited at the base of each plant.
Remember to think about when you will be spending time outdoors. You may want to avoid running your system during that time. Consider things as simple as when you leave for work in the morning, plan ahead to avoid getting sprayed.

Our sprinkler technicians start winterizing sprinkler systems by the end of September. Some people prefer to shut their systems down early, while others may wait until December. Generally, it takes several consecutive days of freezing temperatures to affect the pipe buried underground. Insulating and covering the backflow prevention device decreases the chance of a break.
When is the best time to turn our sprinkler system on?
Colorado is notorious for its spring snow storms. We typically start activating commercial sprinkler systems in March and April, and residential sprinkler systems in the beginning of May. Wrapping the backflow prevention device with insulation will greatly reduce the risk of it freezing and breaking.
